Appearances in Hogwarts Legacy is the possibility of changing the appearance of the main character without affecting the stats of the worn piece of Gear. Cosmetic alterations can be applied to Gear via the Change appearance option in the Gear Menu. Many appearences can be earned by completing special Challenges or Quests.

In the Harry Potter universe, Appearances is a spell to change used to change the appearance of objects. In this Harry Potter game, Appearances is not used or cast like other spells, it does not share the same mechanics. Appearances is the background explaination behind the appearance customization menu available in the game, allowing players to change the appearance of their Gear to look more appealing to the Player's style.
The range of Appearances and Styles is so vast and rich that every player will be able to express their own style in the game. Also, they will be able to periodically change styles and obtain more possible appearances to choose from for each piece of Gear as they advance in the game.

How do Appearances work in Hogwarts Legacy?
The system seems to be very simple, Wizards are able to find, craft and upgrade all sorts of Gear. So this system consists on changing the appearance of an obtained Gear, into the appearance of another already obtained piece of Gear. Wizards need to obtain 2 pieces of Gear to combine the stats of one with the appearance of the other.
Appearances doesn't have any special cost or requirement, and it doesn't even need any kind of station to be done. Players can do this from the Pause Menu, by selecting Gear. Hover over a gear slot for the piece of Gear they want to change, and select the "Change Appearence" button. Then select the piece of Gear with the desired appearance. There are no limits on the amount of times players can change a single item appearance.
This could mean that Players can find themselves out buying cheap Gear from a Merchant with bad stats, just to obtain its appearance for another, more valuable piece of Gear.
Why Appearances in Hogwarts Legacy?
In many games, it is pretty common to find pieces of Gear or Armor with very high stats, but an undesired appearance to the player. Appearances allows Wizards to collect pieces of Gear with very good stats and qualities, and at the same time collect pieces of Gear that may look awesome even if their stats are not as good. Now Wizards can get the best of both worlds.
This will also allow Wizards to keep the look of Exclusive Cosmetic items without affecting their performance.
