In the Shadow of the Study | Hogwarts Legacy Wiki

In the Shadow of the Study is a Side Quest in Hogwarts Legacy. Side Quests are not required to advance in the main story of the game, but still completing these Quests can be useful to obtain Rewards for completing them. These quests sometimes serve as tutorials for new activities and may contain some Lore or background of the Harry Potter Universe.

Meet Sebastian outside the Slytherin common room

You can wait in the glowing circle to make Sebastian spawn outside the Slytherin common room if he isn't already there.

Go with Sebastian to meet Ominis

When Sebastian directs you to Ominis, follow him.

Speak with Ominis

Upon arriving to where you'll follow Sebastian, speak with Ominis.

Open Slytherin's door

There are two braziers north of Ominis in the hallway and one to the east. Use Incendio to ignite the three braziers.

Explore beyond the doorway

Pick up Noctua Gaunt's Note 01 of 05 item from the east wall at the end of the hall by going down the flight of stairs.

Figure out how to progress

You'll need to use Reparo to continue on,

Speak with Ominis about the hissing

Once you hear the hissing, speak with Ominis regarding it.

Wait for Ominis to open the door

Wait for Ominis to arrive and open the Serpent door.

Explore beyond the Serpent Door

Once the seprent door opens, explore the area.

Find a way through

To start the flame with Incendio, crouched through the damaged gate to the south. Match the symbols to the one that resembles a little letter "a" using the Slytherin Lock next to it. Go back to Ominis, who is standing beside a Slytherin Lock and another locked gate. Set the top dial to the circle sign and the bottom dial to the snake symbol. Pass through the gate that has been left open to access the Slytherin Lock at the end of the corridor. This will open the gate next to Sebastian. Set the top dial to the sideways sign and the bottom dial to the symbol that resembles a "A."

Talk to Sebastian

Talk to Sebastian once you're confined to the space where Crucio is lying on the floor.

Talk to Ominis about Crucio

You can either wait for Sebastian to talk to Ominis, or you can directly talk with Ominis.

Talk to Sebastian

To open the door, choose any of the dialogue options. You must use the learning spell mechanic if you choose a dialogue option that asks if you wish to learn the Cruciatus Curse. You will be presented with three options:

• Refuse to learn Crucio
• Learn Crucio and cast it on Sebastian
• Learn Crucio and have Sebastian cast it on you

It does not matter whom the spell is cast on, you will learn Crucio either way with the later two options.

Explore beyond the doorway

After entering the doorway, explore further.

Search Slytherin's Scriptorium

In front of the enormous statue, take the Slytherin's Spellbook from the altar.

Give the book to Sebastian

Once you pick up the book, give it to Sebastian.

Leave the Scriptorium

You can return to the Slytherin dungeon by following the waypoint to the statue behind Sebastian.

Listen to what Ominis has to say

After listening to Sebastian and Ominis speak, this will mark the end of this Side Quest.

Hogwarts Legacy In the Shadow of the Study Information

 In the Shadow of the Study Side Quest can be obtained as indicated as follows:

• Reached Level 16
• Have Completed the In The Shadow of Bloodline Relationship Quest
• Have Completed The High keep Main Quest
• Completed one more quest after The High Keep

In the Shadow of the Study Rewards in Hogwarts Legacy

 By completing In the Shadow of the Study Side Quest you will obtain the following Rewards:

• Crucio (Optional)
• 180XP

• Players who refuse to learn Crucio during the quest can still use it within the Dark Arts Battle Arena, available if they've purchased the Deluxe Edition of the game.
