Moth Frame Puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy are one of the various types of Puzzles aspiring wizards and witches will come across on their journey. Moth Frame Puzzles involve finding large, empty picture frames designed with a moth motif. These magical frames and the moths that like to rest on them hold secrets that are revealed when the puzzle is solved. This page covers an extensive guide to finding and solving the many Moth Frame Puzzles scattered across the world of Hogwarts Legacy.

What are Moth Frames in Hogwarts Legacy

Moth Frames are large mirrors that you often see either hanging on a wall or displayed outside by some objects without a reflection and just a black surface. Interacting with the mirror with the Lumos spell will show an area that you must look for to find the moth that goes into the moth-shaped indent that is required to solve the puzzle.

There are a total of  20 Moth Frames for you to encounter, 15 of which are in Hogwarts Castle while the other 5 are in Hogsmeade. While some Moth Frames can be found easily hung up on walls in Hogwarts Castle or by some objects in Hogsmeade, some may need you to learn other spells such as Alohomora or Depulso to get to a locked area that has a Moth Frame within.

"Like a Moth to a Frame" is a side quest that players will encounter that introduces Moth Frames to you and teaches you how to solve this type of puzzle as well when encountered throughout the game. You will be able to encounter this side quest quite early on in the game, so it's quite unmissable.

While completing all 20 of the Moth Frame puzzles does not reward players with an achievement or trophy, completing the "Like a Moth to a Frame" side quest by speaking to Lenora Everleigh will reward players with the Cobalt Regalia Attire. This attire can be accessed in the gear tap in the menu.

How to Solve Moth Frame Puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy

The early side quest Like a Moth to a Frame introduces this puzzle type and its mechanics to you. The quest is started in Hogwarts Castle's Central Hall in the Library Annex. Near where the statue with the three mermaids is found, you will find Lenora Everleigh muttering to herself in front of a peculiar empty frame, which is pitch black where a picture should be. This is a Moth Frame. Note the indentation of a moth on it as it is the key to solving these puzzles. You must find a moth to rest within the indentation to unlock the frame's secrets.

Instructions

Step #1 - Activate the Frame

During the Like a Moth to a Frame quest, Lenora will note that the frames react to the Lumos spell. So, whenever you find one of these frames, cast Lumos in front of it. This causes the moths around the frame to move and the frame will depict a painting of a location. This painting provides a clue as to where the missing moth that goes in the bottom of the frame can be found.

Step #2 - Find the Location with the Moth

Examine the painting carefully and then look for the location depicted. You typically do not have to venture too far as most Moth Frame paintings are of a location nearby. Do note that moths will not appear until you've illuminated their associated frames. Some frames and moths are also locked behind areas and hidden locations which may require additional spells.

Step #3 - Attract the Moth

Once you find the moth, cast Lumos again to attract it to your wand. It will now follow you around for as long as you keep the Lumos spell active. Note that if you are having trouble finding the moth, the Lumos spell has a pretty wide radius and you can simply keep it active around the general location and the moth will fly towards you.

Step #4 - Guide the Moth towards the Frame

Once the moth has been attracted, guide it towards the frame. Stand near the frame, deactivate Lumos, and the moth will fly towards it and rest in the indentation in the frame. Afterwards, the puzzle is complete and you will receive your reward.

Why should I complete Moth Frame Puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy?

Moth Frame Puzzles are very quick to solve and each one will reward the player with a Field Guide Page upon completion. Field Guide Page collectibles give +80 XP each until you complete their associated Challenges, and there are plenty to be found.

Other Types of Moth Puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy

Aside from the Moth Frames, you may encounter sealed gates in dungeons and other locations. The gates in question have a similar Moth motif, just as the frames do. These gates require 3 moths in order to unseal and they are typically found within the same room, flying around small, lamp-post like pedestals. The mechanics are the same as the frames; go to a moth on a pedestal, cast Lumos and guide it towards the gate. Repeat as necessary for however many moths the door is missing. In some dungeons, you may also find a strange contraption in the ground, again with the same moth motif. These contraptions are used to raise platforms in some rooms and are powered by moths. Once you guide a moth to such a contraption, it will activate and you can then cast Depulso on the contraption to activate the platform. One such dungeon that use these mechanics is The Collector's Cave which is visited during the main quest "The Helm of Urtkot".
