Gear in Hogwarts Legacy are pieces of equipment that characters can wear to improve defensive capabilities, resistances, and various bonus effects against Status Effects. Characters have 6 Gear slots that can be equipped. These slots are: Handwear, Facewear, Headwear, Neckwear, Cloaks and Robes, and Outfits. In this Harry Potter game, all pieces of Gear also have different rarities, and these rarities are determined by the colored background the item has. Green for Well-Appointed, Blue for Superb, Purple for Extraordinary, and Orange for Legendary. Note that ALL stats for Gear is random, except for Legendary Gear, which is the only type of gear that has Fixed Stats. Certain pieces of Gear can be upgraded and traits can be slotted into them, thus granting diverse kinds of bonuses, such as resistance against certain enemy types.
Gear Appearances Hogwarts Legacy
There are two main types of Gear. Regular Gear will have its own set of stats, but there are also obtainable Appearance items that are worn for appearance purposes and do not add or improve a player's stats. Once obtained, Players will be able to transmogrify their equipment in Hogwarts Legacy. This allows players to change the appearance of an item with another item of the same type, but retain the original stats.
How to Transmog in Hogwarts Legacy
Players can use the appearances of any gear or items once it as been obtained without modifying their preferred stats. This can be done from the Gear menu. The Gear menu screen is also where you can view which gear for each slot you have equipped, your equipped Wand Handle and Broom. Clicking into each category will reveal all items you have of the item type on your inventory. To change the appear of your current equipped gear, hover over the quipped item from the main gear page. This will display the description box of the item in a pop-up. At the bottom of the box, you will find the option to change the appearance. Click on the indicated button or key and it will display all available appearances for you to choose from without changing your equipped gear.
Unidentified Gear Hogwarts Legacy
Some collected gear can be obtained as an Unidentified Gear Item. This will replace an image of the item with a question mark and will only display the type of gear it is and the rarity of the gear. All offense and Defence stats will also be hidden until the item is identified. You can view all Identified and Unidentified gear in the Gear menu when browsing through each type of item. To Identify the Gear piece, take it back to your Room of Requirement. A Desk of Description will already be provided to you upon unlocking the Room of Requirement. Should you remove the desk, the Desk of Descriptions can be conjured with the Conjuring Spell anytime. It is found with all other Utilities and will cost 4 Moonstone.
Take any unidentified gear to the desk. It is main use is to identify unknown pieces of gear and their properties. Approach the desk to reveal the 'Identify' prompt then hold down the button to identify all unknown gear in your inventory.
Where to get New Gear in Hogwarts Legacy
Gear in Hogwarts Legacy is most commonly obtained from chests encountered throughout different Locations of the Wizarding World as loot. Gear and differnt equipment are also sometimes given as rewards for completing various Quests and Challenges. You may also encounter specific Merchants who will sell a stock of gear. Gladrags Wizardwear is Hogsmeade is a well-known clothing shop run by Augustus Hill. He carries and sells a rotating stock of Gear that changes up once in a while. Most Merchants will also buy gear which can be useful to clear you inventory and earn gold. Merchants will generally buy all gear for a set price which will depend on the rarity of the item.
How to Increase Your Gear Slots
When your inventory becomes full, your character will be unable to pick up any new gear items forcing you to destroy them to make room or sell them to a Merchants. However, Gear slots can be upgraded by completing the Merlin Trial Exploration Challenges encountered around the Map of the Wizarding World. These are marked with a feather on the map. Completing more Merlin Trials will increase your gear storage. View your progress on the Challenges menu for all your available challenges.
Hogwarts Legacy Gear Levels and Stats
Pieces of Gear have a number under their name that indicates their level. Players have to match or exceed that level with their own Wizarding Level in order to be able to equip that piece. If their level is below that level, that piece of gear won't be equippable and will be shown with this icon in the inventory. Gear Stats will also be measured by Offense and Defence. This will be highlighted in green or red depending on if it is an increase or decrease from your current equipment. The Gear stats can also sometimes be obtained with a set Trait. Traits and Upgrades for gear can be modified at an Enchanted Loom.
Hogwarts Legacy Gear Traits & Trait Slots
Certain pieces of gear possess Trait Slots, depending on the rarity of the item. This can be equipped with Traits at an Enchanted Loom. Superb items have a Trait Slot Level 1, Extraordinary ones have a Trait Slot Level 2 and, finally, Legendary items have a Trait Slot Level 3. Players can weave traits into pieces of gear at the enchanted loom, located in the Room of Requirement.
Hogwarts Legacy Gear Upgrades
Pieces of gear can be upgraded up to 3 times. By upgrading their gear, players gain larger defense bonuses on their equipment. This requires players to have progressed enough in the main story to unlock the Room of Requirement and have access to the Loom. Players can then use the Enchanted Loom to apply Traits to different gear and add upgrades with the required Materials.
The Enchanted Loom Hogwarts Legacy
The Loom is a Utility Conjuration Item. In the Room of Requirement, players will be introduced to the Loom by Deek during The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom Main Quest. Players will then be tasked to Conjure an Enchanted Loom with the Conjuring Spell in the Room of Requirement. Access all your conjuration items by casting the Conjuring Spell. The Loom is sorted as a Utility Conuration Item. Once players have access to the Loom, the quest will then also walk players through how to Add a Trait to an Item of Clothing. The whole quest provides all the instructions on how to rescue Beasts and release them into the Vivarium in order to care for them and gather Materials that can be used at the Loom for Gear Upgrades.
Types of Gear in Hogwarts Legacy
Gear Items are sorted by rarities and then by type. Players can pick up and equip a combination of different Handwear, Facewear, Headwear, Neckwear, Cloaks and Robes and Outfits. Other available gear items displayed in this menu include your Wand Handle, an item that can be equipped in order to modify the appearance of your wand. You can also change your equipped Flying Mounts and your equipped Broom from this menu.
All Gear in Hogwarts Legacy
Facewear in Hogwarts Legacy refers to the eyewear wizards or witches can equip. At the start of the game, while creating their playable characters, players are given a few options regarding this type of equipment. At least those first options, don't grant players any advantage over the ones who decide to not wear them.

Can I put a Level 1 Trait in a Level 3 Trait slot, or would I always need to have a gear with the same Trait slot level at hand?
