Will Hogwarts Legacy adhere to Wizarding World lore

Yes. While Hogwarts Legacy is not a direct adaptation of the books and films, game is anchored in Wizarding World lore. Avalanche has created a unique gaming experience that is inspired by the magical universe created by J.K. Rowling, in which players will find new and unexpected locations, characters and story elements.

What is the original story of Hogwarts Legacy?

Players will experience life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1800s as they embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world. They will grow their magical abilities by mastering spells, brewing potions, taming magical beasts and more.

Hogwarts Legacy Lore Overview

Hogwarts Legacy features the familiar elements of the Wizarding World seen in the books and films, but creates a new story that does not focus on any of the previously introduced characters of the franchise. Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the 1800s, a time before the setting of the books and movies. Players will experience the life of a new student at Hogwarts during this time as a fifth year ready to attend classes and improve magical knowledge, as well as meeting professors and new friends. Players can experience the same well-loved Locations such as Hogwarts, Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forest with a whole new timeline and perspective. 

The game a introduces a new character that will display unique abilities related to Ancient Magic, a feature with heavy focus throughout the game. The first mention of Ancient Magic begins at the early trailer release of Hogwarts Legacy. Players will play as a unique character that has the ability to manipulate powerful Ancient Magic hidden in the wizarding world. You'll need to uncover what's behind the return of this forgotten magic and who is seeking to harness it to destroy wizardkind- as you may be the one that decides the fate of the entire wizarding world. Your character is not only expected to sense Ancient Magic, but be able to Invoke Ancient Magic. 

Hogwarts Legacy Characters

Well-loved characters such as Harry, Hermoine and Ron do not make an appearance in Hogwarts Legacy since the story exists on a different timeline in the past, but instead focuses on the player as the main character who discovers the history of Ancient Magic, how its affects the Wizarding World and how to wield and control it. Players can create and customize their own character to play the game, but as a single player RPG, the character will follow a general set of Main Quests and opportunities that are identical to other players' gameplay until they are met with a few in-game decisions.

Main Character

All Players will play as the main character, a fifth year student late to begin lessons in Hogwarts. This character is unique with its relations and history to Ancient Magic, making them the center of the plot. Because of their Ancient Magic blood, they are able to manipulate, invoke and sense the Ancient Magic that affects the wizarding world. This talent is unique to you and has the potential to uncover this supposed dormant power with the help of your Professors and Companions. 

I have a rare ability to see whispers of ancient magic.. It's a powerful magic that should only be wieded by a select few.

Companions

Other Students at Hogwarts can be befriended to accompany you around certain Main Quests. A few if these friends then become Companions that can join you or lead you to the next parts of each quest allowing you to learn more spells and further progress through the main story of the game. Your relationships with each of these characters can grow allowing you to learn more about them and their own personal histories, thus also grant access to some additional Relationship Quests. Your three main companions will be introduced as Natsai Onai, Poppy Sweeting, and Sebastian Sallow from the Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Slytherin Houses respectively.

Other Characters 

Other Characters you meet are the different Professors, Students and Merchants that you will encounter as you progress through the school year and attend different classes, and meet different people

Antagonists

Players will encounter Dark Wizards and Goblins, set out to harness the returning Ancient Magic and use its power against the Wizards and Witches of the Wizarding World. There is a rumours of a Goblin Rebellion led by the Goblin Ranrok with the support of some allied Dark Wizards including Victor Rookwood. They seek to uncover remnants of old magic that is believed to be hidden deep by a group of witches and wizards in a number of commissioned repositories. 

Hogwarts Legacy Setting

Hogwarts Castle

Much like the books, the same Hogwarts, the famed school of witchcraft and wizardry, will act as the main location of Hogwarts Legacy where Hogwarts students practice their skills and abilities. Players as the main character, will take attend classes at Hogwarts Castle as a fifth year student and learn about their own history and relations to Ancient Magic. The Castle will be full of secrets, enchantments and mysteries to uncover and explore. This includes dungeons and secret passageways. 

Since Hogwarts Legacy was adapted from the books and films, Hogwarts will continue to share the same history. It was founded in the tenth century by two wizards and two witches, Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin, representing the four Houses of Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin.

Each of the four Houses of Hogwarts represent the bold characteristics found in each student and character. Characters are then sorted into their designated houses by the Sorting Hat. 

• Gryffindor is the house of the brave and daring. Its members are usually brave, courageous, and chivalrous. If you’re the type of player who’s not afraid to take risks and isn’t afraid of a challenge, then Gryffindor is the house for you. Common traits of Gryffindors include loyalty, courage, and determination.

• Hufflepuff is the house of the loyal and hardworking. Its members are usually patient, kind, and true. If you’re the type of player who likes to work hard and stick to a plan, then Hufflepuff is the house for you. Common traits of Hufflepuffs include determination, loyalty, and hard work.

• Ravenclaw is the house of the wise and intelligent. Its members are usually intelligent, analytical, and creative. If you’re the type of player who likes to think things through and find creative solutions to problems, then Ravenclaw is the house for you. Common traits of Ravenclaws include intelligence, creativity, and a thirst for knowledge.

• Slytherin is the house of the ambitious and cunning. Its members are usually ambitious, resourceful, and determined. If you’re the type of player who likes to take risks and is determined to reach your goals, then Slytherin is the house for you. Common traits of Slytherins include ambition, resourcefulness, and determination.

The Highlands

The Highlands encompass all the regions surrounding the Hogwarts Castle grounds. This is where the rest of your adventure outside of your regular classes and assignments will take place. It includes some familiar locations such as the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Valley. It is made of up of the following Locations that can be explored.

Ancient Magic in Hogwarts Legacy

Ancient Magic is a type of powerful sorcery that is believed to be dormant during the time of Hogwarts Legacy. However, you as a student with Ancient Magic in your bloodline, will be capable of invoking Ancient Magic and sensing it in the world around you, a unique talent central to the plot of Hogwarts Legacy. Players can encounter Ancient Magic Hotspots throughout the the Wizarding World and will need to uncover the reason for its sudden reappearance. It is said that someone is seeking to harness it in order to destroy wizardkind. Finding the answers and uncovering these mysteries can determine the fate of the wizarding world and determine what kind of legacy you leave behind. 

You will then discover that Wizards and Witches have died in pursuit of knowledge about this ancient magic that has been dormant for centuries. You will be the key to understanding why. Upon the discovery of realizing the protagonist obtains the power to see traces of this magic, players are then first introduced to Ranrok. 

Goblin Rebellion Hogwarts Legacy

The magical abilities you learn to master through your schoolwork will soon become tested, as you unravel a dangerous mystery by working alongside the accomplished and yet enigmatic Professor Fig to try and discover if the rumours of a mounting Goblin Rebellion hold and weight- and if the safety of Hogwarts lies in the balance. 

The negativity stems from the relationships between the Goblins and Witches & Wizards of the Wizarding World. As Lodgok says, for centuries wizards have refused to share their magical knowledge with goblins nor allow them too carry wands. Goblins since then have spent their lives mistrusting wizardkind. This stemmed Ranrok to believe that the wizards continue to harbour secret powerful magic stored in the repositories that were once commissioned by a group of wizards and witches to create. 

Bragbor's Journals

Ranrok was convinced that the repositories mentioned in his ancestor Bragbor's Journals contained a magical power that wizards wanted to keep for themselves and is determined to take it for goblinkind. He spends his time now studying the journals and searching for these repositories in order to use them against wizardkind. He started searching locations relating to anywhere connected to the five names mentioned in the journals: Rackham, Fitzgerald, Bakar, Morganach and Rookwood, believing that this would leading him to the location of the repositories. As Lodgok describes his time searching with Ranrok, he describes their encounter with the first repository. He believes that the search for the repositories were transforming Ranrok and the rest of the Goblins. Ranrok never recovered all of Brabor's journals, but from what was uncovered, they believe the great repository can be found beneath Rookwood Castle. As the story progresses, the last journal is revealed to be with Lodgok, resulting in Ranrok deeming him a traitor. This sealed the fate of Lodgok. 

Ranrok

Ranrok leads the Goblin Rebellion that takes place during Hogwarts Legacy. He represents the opposing forces that seek the harness the dormant Ancient Magic to change the future of the Wizarding World and wipe all wizards and witches. To bolster his ranks and keep tabs on the events surrounding Hogsmeade and the nearby Hogwarts, he forms an uneasy alliance with Victor Rookwood and his faction of Dark Wizards. 

During the game, Lodgok, his brother, introduces Bragbor, an ancestor of Ranrok and a renowned metal-worker. Bragbor's journals described repositories that he had been commissioned for a group of witches and wizards. Since the contents of the journals were unveiled, he ordered the search relating to anywhere connected to the five names mentioned in the journals: Rackham, Fitzgerald, Bakar, Morganach and Rookwood, believing that this would leading him to the location of the repositories, that might contain powerful magic.

• While Ranrok is decidedly evil and has brought and will bring tremendous suffering to the Wizarding World, his hatred for wizardkind was not born without reason. During The Tale of Rowland Oakes, the protagonist is recruited by Adelaide Oakes to search for her uncle, a metal trader named Rowland Oakes who she suspects had gone missing after being involved in dealings with Ranrok's Loyalists. After his rescue, Rowland divulges information he overheard regarding Ranrok's early years.
• As a child, Ranrok happened upon an illegal dragon-breeding camp. Being fascinated with the creatures, he would frequently visit the camp in secret for weeks to watch the dragons while concealing his presence. After several weeks of surveilling the dragons and wanting to join the wizards at the camp, he finally mustered the courage to speak to the wizard in charge. The wizard in question happened to drop his wand which Ranrok picked up and with good intentions, wished to return it as a means of introducing himself. However, the sight of a Goblin with a wand sent the wizard into a rage, beating Ranrok close to death. This unfortunate and extreme act of cruelty is what birthed Ranrok's vendetta against wizardkind, forever steering him into the path of vengeance. 

Lodgok

Lodgok is a Goblin and a brother and supporter of Ranrok. He first appears at The Three Broomsticks Inn, but laterbefriends the protagonist and aids him by obtaining knowledge of Ranrok's plans. He also once thought negatively on the wizards and witches of the wizarding world until he reveals an encounter he had with a witch who spoke with reverence about the Goblins' Intelligence and Skills. They had agreed to share their knowledge. This witch turned out to be Miriam, the wife of Professor Eleazar Fig. When his brother found out of their short alliance, it caused a rift between them. 

Lodgok believed that his brother's search for the repositories mentioned in their ancestor's jrounals was transforming them and the other goblin's and no longer took part in their search. 

Victor Rookwood

Victor Rookwood is a Dark Wizard who allies with Ranrok. He is one of the main antagonists of the game and it is believed that one of the largest repositories that Ranrok is searching for can be found between Rookwood Castle.  

Matilda Weasley

• In Hogwarts Legacy, players will be able to interact with Matilda Weasley and learn about her life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was sorted into the Gryffindor House, known for its bravery and boldness, and quickly made a name for herself as a talented and hardworking witch. She excelled in her studies and was well-liked by her peers, due to her kind and friendly nature.
• Matilda Weasley is a beloved character in the world of Harry Potter, and her appearance in Hogwarts Legacy will no doubt be a treat for fans of the franchise. With her warm and loving personality, Matilda is sure to become a favorite NPC in the game. 
• Matilda is a very perceptive witch, she feels that something is odd about your late arrival and questions your character regarding that subject.
• She has befriended Deek, the house-elf since she was a second year student at Hogwarts.

Phineas Nigellus Black

• Phineas Nigellus Black is an NPC in Hogwarts Legacy, set in the Wizarding World created by J.K. Rowling. He is a wizard and a member of the famous Black family, known for their pure-blood heritage and strong allegiance to the Dark Arts.
• Phineas Nigellus Black is depicted as a strict and rigid individual who strongly believes in the superiority of pure-blood wizards and the strict adherence to the laws of magic. He serves as the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
• In Hogwarts Legacy the player character can interact with Phineas Nigellus and receive quests and tasks from him. The tasks he assigns are often related to uncovering the secrets and mysteries of Hogwarts and its history. Phineas Nigellus also serves as a source of information for the player, providing insight into the political and social landscape of the Wizarding World.
• While Phineas Nigellus is an important character in Hogwarts Legacy, his depiction as a strict and rigid pure-blood wizard is not without controversy. 

Eleazar Fig

• Eleazar Fig is the first Npc and Professor players meet as soon as their journey starts. Just after Character Creation.
• He is the husband to a woman named Miriam, a witch who has been mentioned by Elazar himself. Lodgok expressed that she was one of the witches to show empathy and respect fot the goblins' intelligence and skill. She died in pursuit of knowledge about this ancient magic that has been dormant for centuries
• Despite his impressive abilities, Professor Fig is not without his quirks. He has a fascination with ancient and obscure artifacts, which he keeps in his office. Players will have the opportunity to explore Professor Fig's office, discover his collection and uncover the hidden secrets he has kept. Throughout the game, players will also have the chance to interact with Eleazar Fig. He will offer Quests and provide valuable information that will aid players in their journey. Through these interactions, players will gain an understanding of the powerful magic Professor Fig practices and the ways in which it can be harnessed to achieve great feats.
• Eleazar Fig is a captivating character in Hogwarts Legacy. With his extensive knowledge and mastery of magic, he is sure to play a significant role in the game. His eccentric personality and love for the arcane make him a memorable NPC, and players will relish learning from him and exploring the magical world. 

Natsai Onai

Wise, quick-witted, and possessed of a need to seek justice, Natsai grew up in Matabeleland, Africa where she attended liagadou — the largest wizatding school in the world. She transfer red to Hogwarts when her mother became the school's Divination professor and is adapting to her new life in Scotland.

• Natsai is the daughter of Professor Onai who was once a Divination teacher at Uagadou, the largest wizarding school in the world, and a gifted Seer whose faith in her sight was shaken by the fact that she did not foresee the loss of her husband. Willing to leave those painful and sad memories behind, she accepts an invitation by Professor Matilda Weasley to teach Divination at Hogwarts.
• Apparently, from what can be seen in a cinematic, Natsai help us to save Highwing a female Hippogriff.
• She presents herself to you as Natty, showing very friendly intentions during Charms Class, as she offers you a sit next to her before Abraham Ronen starts the class.
• At the end of the Charms Class, Natty tells you about how difficult it was for her to get used to Hogwarts. She was transferred there from Uagadou, in Uganda, just before her fourth year as her Mother received an offer to teach Divination in Hogwarts.

Poppy Sweeting

Poppy is a bright and compassionate girl with extensive knowledge of and a deep love for creatures. In fact, she believes creatures have far more redeeming qualities than most people, and has a particular aversion to poachers and those who work with them. 

Poppy Sweeting is a Hufflepuff student at Hogwarts with a heart for all the mystical creatures. Poppy Sweeting has a king heart and loves magical beasts- connecting with them more easily than with humans. This compassion for magical beasts stems from her early childhood having grown up with parents that were poachers. This links one of her related quest to Trace the Poachers. 

Sebastian Sallow

Sebastian is a charming and extroverted boy whose twin sister, Anne, suffers from a mysterious, debilitating curse. Sebastian is convinced that her last hope for a cure lies in the Dark Arts — and he is determined to find it.

• Sebastian is willing to do everything to save Anne, his twin sister. She has been cursed by Goblins in the past, and this has led Sebastian to never doubt his Skills and grasp every bit of knowledge available to try to find a cure. Even if that means dealing with the Dark Arts.
• He seems to be seizing his time in Hogwarts, proving to be an excellent student, even if sometimes he likes to push the boundaries a bit too far and get into trouble often.
• He lives in Feldcroft alongside Anne Sallow, his twin sister and his uncle Solomon, a former Auror.
